“We need to get to the deepest part of the mine,” Evan said quickly. “Do we go right? Left? Straight?” The split was coming up fast.

“Nope,” Devlin said. “We go down.”

He picked up a rock and hurled it. The rock hit a switch and the tracks shifted. Their cart dipped down a steep slope and shot around another bend. Cleo pulled on the hand brake to slow them before they flew off the tracks.

“Wow,” Evan said.

“Dwarves know their way around the mines,” Devlin said. “It’s why the trolls force us to work.”

“Force you?” Evan said. “That’s terrible.”

“We’d work here anyway,” Devlin said. “We just don’t want to work for bossy trolls.”

“Speaking of trolls …” Cleo said.

The other cart slammed into them from behind. One of the trolls leaped into their cart and bared his yellow teeth. He growled and swung his club with the force of a sledgehammer. Things were not looking good.
